AFA Lesson #3

A.          Most often people’s perceptions of war are that it will be won easily by their favored side.  The young are especially prone to this deception.  They think that it will be over in a quickly, but actually it takes longer than what they think.  I am not saying that all wars are long, but they do not stop after one battle.  Typing this I think of the quote by Ellen Creighton “Yore hopes is making a fool of yore reason”. 

           At the battle of Bull Run or to the south the battle of Manassas, it was thought that the Civil War would end right there.  Congressmen and statesmen came within firing range of the battle with young ladies to watch the battle as if it were a show.  They would take out their field glasses and watch the battle.  Seemingly pulling enjoyment from watching men slaughter each other.  Near the end of the battle the spectators came to realize that they were in danger when the Union soldiers starting fleeing through the carriages.  After that, the spectators fled in their buggies, trampling soldiers and such.  The battle was over.
