Chapter twenty-six, Another World, starts off on with York having a cerebral hemorrhage. Gracie and the sons hurriedly drove York to the hospital in Nashville. Shortly after, he recovered enough to be able to walk from his bed to the living room couch or to the porch, but the day soon came when he took his last step and "...the infantry hero could not take another step...". Paralysis greatly affected York's life, but it didn't stop him from getting into local and world-wide affairs. Eventually, even travel got to uncomfortable for the old soldier and he lost sight in his shooting eye thanks to an aneurysm.
Chapter twenty-seven, A Great Country, Is short and sweet. It is about how York gained around 20k to help with taxes that the government was unfairly giving him. He gained the cash because veterans from all across America gave small amounts of cash like a dollar each. Finally, with his taxes paid off, York was admitted to the hospital for the eleventh time in two years. This would be his last time to be in a hospital. After a few days of being in the hospital, York fell into a coma. A day later on September 2nd, 1963, Sergeant York died quietly and peacefully.
The last chapter in the book, A Hero's Legacy, is the conclusion to what happened to the rest of York's family. Gracie continued to live at the old farmhouse until the day she died, but she also traveled across America doing appearances in place of her deceased husband. Jimmy, York's oldest, took over his father's enterprise and the youngest of the family retired fro the Air-Force so that he could help out on the farm. This chapter also summarizes the entire book about Alvin C. York's remarkable legacy.
