So far From the Bamboo Grove by Yoko Kawashima Watkins

So Far From the Bamboo Grove is the remarkable story of Yoko, Ko, and Mrs. Kawashima and their journey from northern Korea to Japan at the end of the second world war. As World War II ended, the Japanese people that were living in Korea were forced from their homes by the vengeful Koreans after being at the top of society since Japan conquered Korea. The story begins in the small Korean village of Naman in northern Korea. The Kawashima family was not rich but was well established had one of the nicest houses in the little village. As World War II ends, Communist Korean soldiers force every Japanese and every non-communist Korean from their homes and kill them. The Kawashima's narrowly escape and so began the long journey to the Japan.
